Putting Food on the Table is a Struggle for 23 Percent of Washington Families

Nearly one in five households in Washington State did not have enough money to buy the food they needed in 2009, according to a recent survey.

The data, part of a new report released by the Food Research and Action Center, shows an average of 23 percent of families in Washington are having difficulties feeding their themselves. According to the report, families with children have been hardest hit by the current recession

That puts Washington substantially behind the national average of families struggling to put food on the table. In the fourth quarter of 2009, 18.5 percent of families across the nation found it hard to find enough funds for three square meals. In fact, the number of hungry families in Washington State increased from 16 percent in 2008 to 18 percent in 2009.
